On January 31, 2012, I learned interesting things about this book. How she designs her own clothes. That was pretty amazing! When Mariquita Delia, Marian and Carolyn where watching movies Mariquita was glancing at Eddie she was pretty shocked he wasn't paying attention to her. So the movie ends and this drunk marine ends up trying to check her out but she keeps walking in a fast pace with Frankie. The marine says "you dirty native! who do you think you are?" All of sudden she sees Eddie come along and knock the man down. Just when she actually thought he wasn't paying attention, he was there. So then time goes by Eddie and Mariquita start to see each other more often and communicate more. Mariquita and Eddie end up falling in love with each other. He ended up meeting her family and getting engaged to Mariquita.

January 26th, 2012

I know its late. But I had a family emergency so didn't have time to put it on. OK on this date we read Chapter 1 about Marquita. I love the 1st chapter because I can relate a lot to it. About having friends to hang out with day in day out. Even were we call each other just to make sure we use the same clothes. Hope it OK Mrs.Q.
Thanks

JANUARY 31,12 APRIL SALAS Chapters 2 and 3

We read chapters 2 and 3 on Mariquita, I can say I'm actually interested in the story and I can't believe I missed the first chapter but I will be making that up at home!

I like how Aunty Da is strong and very witty for a woman who is blind, how she does her daily dues and cooking too.

Mariquita and Eddie just come to show that guamanian's still have those secret relationships and we still get married young, I think it's a normal thing here in Guam.

But I can also say I was also interested in Mrs.Q' s story of her neighbor Tony and the termite infestation, I like how he was amazed by coconut husk burning and he actually had a small bbq pit but used it only for decoration. I swear I wanted to laugh so hard in class! Tony is an unforgettable character(person). Lol.

I also like how Mrs. Q told us about her story on her family being more civilized when her husband comes around, alot of our families do the same thing.

It's a great book Mrs. Q I can't wait for you to read to us again, even though it's like kindergarten but I love your reading voice it so goes with the story!!!!

Mariquita was grateful of how Eddie came to her rescue.  They went out on secret dates hiding their relationship from her parents. Eddie was welcome to her family, that he learned the traditions and the chamorro culture.  Finally, Eddie and Mariquita was engaged.  I can not wait till our next meeting this book is remarkable.

JANUARY 31, 2012 (TUESDAY)

Today,we continued on to reading MARIQUITA (A Tragedy of Guam). I liked how Mariquita was getting irritated of Eddie because he wasn't giving her attention but he was just into the movie. The way Eddie showed his love for her was very courageous and brave. But one part I found very funny is when the girls were wearing hats just to see a movie. (how odd is that?) I believe til this day that the common chamorro courtesy still does exist for the ones that acknowledge its culture.

January 26 2012

it was wonderful as Mrs.Q. read a book tittle '' Mariquita tragedy of Guam'' to us even tho it was only chapter one I really enjoyed it! I guess it's because I can't remember the last time anyone has ever read a book to me, all I can remember was the tittle of the book and it was the ugly duckling. other then that it was read it yourself gigi, sound it out, and  if you don't understand it get a dictionary. LoL I know poor me. but! a life lesson learn was you don't need anyone to do anything for you when you can figure it out on your own with guidance.

JANUARY 26, 2012 (THURSDAY)

Felt like a litte school girl today because  our  teacher read to us. Her voice was very lovely, soothing and enjoyable all at the same time. It was crazie even after all these years some of the locations in the book still does exist. My hubbie Felt like a litte school girl today because  our  teacher read to us. Her voice was very lovely, soothing and enjoyable all at the same time. It was crazie even after all these years some of the locations in the book still does exist. My hubbie works at AK MOTORS and told him about his job being the first car service on GUAM. Some of the people is doing the same things to this point and thats what makes me appreciate life even more.

January 26, 2012

For our first show and tell, story we read Mariquita. Wow! Mariquita is the first written book in Guam. Mrs. Q. challenged the class to bring in another written Chamorro book. Today will be our first thirty minutes reading. In order to retell a story it must be told by the begining, middle, and end.

January 26, 2012

Today marked our first day of novel reading.  The story "Mariquita" is quite a unique one in that it is one of the few; if not the only young adult Chamorru novel publication.

While reading strategies were both discussed before and after the reading, it was overwhelming to have experienced that strategies were not forced on any one of you.  Rather, reading strategies were applied ... naturally.  Chapter one discussions of certain landmarks in Agana (visualizing and connecting), of public figures (visualizing, questioning and connecting) and of Chamorru traditions (connecting) are indeed strategies that all good readers practice for reading.

Congratulations!  You all are doing such an amazing job with this course!  Stay excited!

January 24, 2012: by April Salas (posted by Mrs. Q)

"What I learned today, What I liked and what I didn't like" - For Mrs.Q's Class...

Today I learned about unskilled and skilled readers.

Mrs.Q , taught me that she had to do what she had to do to get where she is today and I admire that.

She also taught me that good readers become good thinkers and, better readers become better writers.

I liked the fact that she had to find herself through copying someone but turning it into something better.

What I didn't like was when she told us we get paid to learn, but we don't get the cash upfront. LOL .

In class today Mrs.Q gave a power point presentation about good reading skills. I liked the lecture because I learned about skills that I can use on my own. I can say that i have used some of those skills in my everyday life especially connecting real life experiences.

jan.24.2012

I was really interested in what we learn on 1-24-12. why we read? I like to read because, i always learn  interesting things. I really like how we are going to know, where we stand in our reading levels and what books to read. the strategies of reading that we will learn this semester.

January 24, 2012 - Tuesday

What I liked about yesterdays session in class is when we got to share what books are good to read, who read what books and some ways to read. I honestly, wasn't able to take notes during the slide show because it was too dark and couldn't see what I was writing. There are ways to read books and can be very relaxing.

JANUARY 24, 2012 (TUESDAY)

The lessons that we went over class were very informative and to the point. It showed how people of all ages still has the mentality and capabilities of becoming a good reader through lots of practice of time and effort. Setting goals for yourself is very important.Reading can last a whole lifetime. How you want to achieve it through your understanding and  to your level skills will make you not only as a good reader but as a good writer as well.
I never knew that reading would be fun and relaxing until I first read the book Dear John by Nicolas Sparks. When I started reading the book it really caught my attention and it was kinda hard to stop reading and so sometimes I read the book even awhile I am eating lunch or dinner. My cousins used to tell me to put the book away and read it later but even when they told me to put it away I found it hard to stop. I enjoy reading only if the book I read is interesting and I can picture what is going on in the story. I think I will learn alot about reading that I did not know, and find that it will help me learn more. I enjoyed the discussion in class because we got to talk about different things and get opinions from each other. I can't wait to start reading a book when the time comes. I just hope that when we choose our books that it won't be so hard to concentrate on reading knowing I have to work and go to school while also being a full time mom.

January 24, 2012

  • I have learned that reading is not an option.
  • Reading is a necessity throughout our daily lives.
  • The importance of being quick thinkers is by reading.
  • To be productive in reading; asks questions, retell and summarize, connect to life experiences.
  • Statistics show reading is healthy for our brain.

January 24, 2012: Tuesday

I was thrilled with your responses on my presentation "Why We Read, Why We Don't Read and Why Reading Is Important".  I was equally thrilled with your delight to jot down notes on my other presentation "Strategies for Reading".  Moreover, I was and remain overwhelmed with our class discussion of reading:  what books to read, types of books we all have read, our reading experiences, our reading strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes.   Tonight I will leave you with this quote by Aldous Huxley:  "Every man who know how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting".  I am looking forward to each and every one of your reading quests.  Empower yourselves and stay motivated ladies :)
