The same day as the kidnapping, Jaycee felt a little queasy that morning and briefly considered telling Carl (stepdad) but changed her mind to avoid an argument. Would her life be normal if she had followed her instinct or would something still happen? How long did these two individuals been following her? These are the few questions that I encountered during the beginning of the novel. Jaycee's mother forgot to kiss her good-bye before she headed out the front door to go work. It reminded me a lot of my mom's disappearance that it brought tremendous tears and sorrow in my eyes. There was one time that Carl didn't like how she was eating her dinner, so he made Jaycee go sit in the bathroom in front of the mirror and watch herself eat. Jayce felt like Carl doesn't like her because everything she was doing was all wrong.
